Valve noise 944S

Just went by a mom & pop dealership to look at a '87 944S. Thinking hard about a track car for Auto-x. The car I looked at would probably be a good canidate. Interior a little rough, no oil puddles, clutch and brakes felt good. What made me walk away though was a fairly loud valve tap on start-up. We listened real close and it's definitely coming from under the valve cover. The car has 94,000 miles on it and the timing belt was last changed at 65,000 so it's due. The dealership owner was saying that the noise "goes away when you get it on the street" but I frankly didn't even want to drive it off the lot. I would image there's any number of problems that would cause this symptom. Bottom line is I'm going to have to get a Porsche mechanic look at this one before I make an offer...

A friend just looked at this car. You already know that it needs maintenance- New timing belt for sure. There better be some wiggle room in that price, or I would walk away.

I told the lot owner if it didn't have the valve noise the very most I could offer without maintenance records would be $5000. He said he wouldn't let it go for that price. It's just too much of a gamble for me not knowing.

I just picked up a nice S for $4000.

I bought it to turn into a race car, but It drives so nice I'm using it as my daily driver for now.

Seller was asking $4500, but was pretty anxious to sell, and jumped pretty quickly when I offered 4000.
