mystery "clunk", bad strut?
Recently I've had a clunk coming from the rear right wheel well area. If I jig to the left even a little bit at a slow speed I get a single hit. Turning to the right is fine. I thought at first something was bouncing around the storage well or my rear speaker was loose, but after cleaning out the trunk it's still there. Could it be anything else? I haven't had a chance to get it up and take a look but I'd like to know what else to look for. If it is the shock, what's the recommended replacement? It's an '84 but has an '86 Turbo suspension. Thanks.

You need to get it up in the air to figure it out. Could be any of the following:
shock (there are no struts in the rear) hub cv joint (I woulds start here since it only happens when you turn and not all the time.

I meant shock, but had strut stuck in my head for some reason.

Dont forget a squirl or cat caught up in there either.
Wanted to also add transmission mounts.

Thanks guys. I did find the jack handle loose in the storage well when I first noticed it and was sure that was it, but after removing everything and making sure the speakers were secure it's still there. Hard left turns, manhole covers *clunk*

Turns out it was a loose sway bar. For once, a cheap and easy fix. I also found out the front tie rod end is on its way out while it was up.

Tie rod is an easy replacement, just make sure you get a new alignment after you do it.

![]() I'm actually taking it in, I would do it myself but it's in pretty bad shape - very loose and has a lot of play by hand when the wheel's in the air - and I don't have the time this week to do it. I'm planning on travelling some distance this weekend and I'd rather not have that to worry about. |

I like the "count the turns" method myself.

You give me hope, thanks for posting the fix action! Mine makes the same noise, and now that you mention it, it started a month or so after I upgraded my sways. (fingers crossed for an easy fix, too)
