944 whine from rear possibly???
Hi I'm a brand new 944 owner. I bought a 1984 944 and had the drivers side rear axle changed because the other one had gone bad. after it was changed, i took it for a test drive and when i got up to about 30 mph there was this loud whine from the rear of the car. it wasn't a high pitched whine. it sounds like something rubbing, so i thought my tires were rubbing on the inside but they weren't. also when i started going alittle faster the sound got louder and louder. I'm lost
and don't want to drive it until this is fixed. can anyone suggest any ideas of what it might be?? any thought or suggestions will be much appreciated

Keep in mind that 944 gearboxes are often noisy but...
Rear wheel bearings noise will change "sound pitch" on cornering load generating more noise when the worn out bearings are being loaded. A worn out ring & pinion will whine louder as speed increases and generate a grinding sound on deceleration. A seriously worn out ring & pinion will clonk. Differential side carrier bearings wear out as well and make some funny noises. Lastly, torque tube bearings also can wear out and make noise. Take any of the above scenarios and compound with the car's inherent design (huge rear hallow hatch area and torque tube connecting engine to trans) and just about anything back there will amplify and drive you insane. Ultimately, if the noise wasn't there previously, you should take your car back to the shop and have them re-check their work.

With the car pointed in a safe direction...
Elevate rear of car on jackstands. Gently engage transmission. Make wheels spin... Get out of car or work with assistance. ![]() [or bring it back and be like 'wtf'] =)

Check the fluid level in your gearbox. When they run low the R&P will whine like an F-16.
