Speedometer has quit
My speedometer used to bounce around a bit, now it just sits there. I have a 1985 944, the early model with the economy doohickey.
Looking for suggestions on where to start troubleshooting. |

It could be the gear at the transmission or inside the speedo has worn out/stripped or the cable broke somewhere in between. Try removing the cable from the back of the speedo and see if it turns as you roll ahead. Best way is to hovercar it up on a hoist and let it spool up in gear.
If the key at the end of the cable spins it's in the speedo. If it doesn't turn it's either at the tranny or the cable's broken.

Early cars drive the speedo with a mechanical cable to the left front hub. The tranny isn't involved at all.
The cable is not very expensive, just replace it. I'm pretty sure the proceedure is on Clark's.

All early cars had the mechanical speedo; if you have three round guages in a rectangular housing, you have an early car; if you have all the guages on a oval panel, you have a later car with electronic speedometer driven off the tranny or ABS sensor.
I'm not sure where I saw the replacement procedure, but I remember reading it somewhere. I though it was on Clarks, but apperently not. I didn't see it in the shop manuals either. Try searching on this site or on rennlist.

I just replyied to a post about the speddo gear. If you take the speedo out and apart, you can roll the peice where the cable goes into the speddo and see if the needle moves or not. The thread is "odometer 84 944 " I think?
