Question Hi, a few questions on parts interchangeability between my 924s and 924/944's...

Hey everyone. New poster here. I just traded for an 87' 924s and I'm posting because I have access to a few parts and I'd like to know if they'll work on my car before I purchase them. How about a hood from an 80' model 924 Turbo? And also front struts and springs, front and rear sway bars, and rear torsion bars and shocks, all from an 86' 944 Turbo. Will these pieces be a bolt in for my 924s? Or require modifications to work? And does anyone know what the rates are on the 944 Turbo springs and bars? And also what the rates are on the factory springs and bars on my car? Thanks in advance!

the hood is a direct fit. it will work no problem.

the struts and springs MAY fit, it depends on the suspension the 924 turbo had.

front and rear sway bars should fit, there is probably no need for modification, though the bushings might be a different size. if they are incorrect size, new ones should be cheap (under $30 for all the incorrect ones).

rear torsion bars and shocks... yes, they will fit. should not require much modification (don't quote me though as i've never done this, but i know a few people that did and they didn't tell me if there was much if any modification required).

rear shocks... yes, they will fit. they are a direct swap with no problems at all for installation. should be a nice upgrade if they are Konis.

i believe the factory spring rates were like 170lb/inch or so, but don't quote me on that one.

good luck!

Question

Thanks for the reply! The hood I was asking about is from an 80' model 924 turbo but the springs, struts, bars, and shocks (all of the suspension parts I was asking about) are off from an 86' 944 Turbo.... Only the hood was from a 924. Do you know if the 944 Turbo suspension parts will work on mine? Sorry if I worded it badly in my original message. I'm running on very little sleep tonight

hello,

i believe the 944 turbo suspension components will swap out, because i have several friends with racing 924s that used the 944 turbo suspension in their cars. the only variables are that there are different specific suspension packages on the 944 turbo (i'm talking about the M030).

here's some details i dug up:

http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Garage/3192/951faq.html

"The 944 Turbo front brakes have a smaller surface area than the normally aspirated cars (86 cm2 vs. 92 cm2 per wheel). However, the turbo uses the same brake pad in the rear while the normally aspirated cars use a smaller pad (63 cm2 per wheel). This results in a total brake area of 344 cm2 for the turbo and 310 cm2 for the 944. Additionally, the 944 Turbo uses 4-piston fixed caliper brakes while the 944 uses single-piston floating caliper brakes. Both models use vented rotors.

The 951s came equipped with 16" cast aluminum wheels (7J x 16 front, 8J x 16 rear). The tires were 205/55 VR 16s front and 225/50 VR 16s rear. Forged aluminum wheels were available as a factory option. Standard equipment on the normally aspirated cars was 7J x 15 wheels with 205/60 VR 15 tires. As optional equipment the 944s could be equipped with the 7J x 16 forged alloy wheels used on the 911s with 205/55 VR 16 tires.

The 944s came equipped with 20 mm front stabilizer bars as standard equipment. Rear stabilizers were only available as an option (14mm). They were also available with 21.5 mm solid or 23 x 3.5 mm tubular front stabilizers. On the 944s rear torsion bars were 23.5mm. The 951s came equipped with 22.5 mm stabilizer bars in front and 18mm stabilizers in the rear and 23.5 mm torsion bars. Tubular front stabilizers were also available for the turbos (24 x 3.7 mm). Until 1985.5, 944s came equipped with steel control arms. Later models were equipped with light alloy control arms. 951s were equipped with the light alloy control arms. Due to the wide variations in shocks, struts, and springs used on the 944s and 944 Turbos, we won't try to discuss them all now to avoid confusion. However, in a later section we will discuss the differences between 944 Turbo model years."

----

does that help you? it seems like the only way to find out would be to try it. as said before, i know people that did it, but i didn't ask how much (i any) they had to do. i know the shocks are a dead swap though.

good luck!

Hi Obin. Thanks for the reply! I've been searching the web for information as well and basically I think the front struts and springs will bolt in with no problems as well as the rear shocks. I've decided not to mess with replacing the torsion bars and sway bars right now. Later on I'd like to switch the rear suspension to adj coilovers anyways. If I can find the individual components and do it without having to buy one of those over priced kits that is. And, right now for the sway bars, I'll probably just replace the bushings with some polyurethane units.
