removing auto trans

Hi all Im just now getting around to pulling auto trans out and I am having trouble.

The repair manual does not cover auto trans.

I have it part the way out and its stuck.

I have the axles off, all bolts of final drive to torx tube, and the two bolts that go straight up through the cross bar, and the coupler allen bolt in the access hole. (although it looks like there has been no movement in the inspection hole)

I has moved rearward about three inches.

I am thinking the single bolt at the top of the cross bar has got to come out to allow more movement rearward. But being I have never had the thing out I dont know if Im going the right way with it.

The reason I am asking is the single cross arm bolt has been totally stripped out, not by me BTW, I may have to cut it or the cross bar to get it out.

Thanks

The factory service manual does cover removal of the transaxle. That said, it is covered in the 924 service manual (which is a prerequisite for the 944 service manual).

Three inches is more than enough for a disconnected transaxle to drop down.

Disconnect the torque converter from the flex plate, remove the halfshafts, cables and fluid hoses, support the transaxle with trans adapter on a floor jack, remove the four mounting bolts, and, voila, the trans drops straight down.

I found the part numbers in pet, auto ring set is 087 409 143 J and man 5 speed is 016 409 143 BF. Has anyone tried this interchange?

I know its a long shot just asking, there are alot more used 5 speeds on ebay to pick from . I don't see any 85.5 and up autos

Thanks
