I need help with my 1979 924... It won't start. The car had been setting for about a year. I replaced the fuel and filters, replaced the coil, etc. I'm going nuts- I don't know if it is a fuel problem or an ignition problem!! Any advice is welcome help. The compression is great the motor is strong. Its some stupid problem!!!!!!!!

did you use any gasoline stabilizer when it was stored? it could be as simple as old gas.

I got it after it was stored (more like impounded) I have drained all the (bad) gas and put in new high test.

if you don't have this figured out by tomorrow... e-mail me with your number. i want to hear the sound your engine is making when it's cranking. i have a 1979 924 also and i've had (and fixed) every hard starting problem that car could ever dream up.
it could be your battery terminals, a relay, a loose connection to the fuel pump, a stuck air sensor, clogged fuel injectors, a bad starter, a bad ignition coil, a loose electrical connection... also, my fingers are ready to fall off from typing all day. it's much easier to hear what the engine is doing and then help you on the phone. e-mail me if you need help. i'll call u. obin

What have you checked?
Did you pull the injectors to see if you are getting fuel while cranking? Did you test to see if you are getting spark? Did you check the points to see if they are ok? Does the fuel pump prime when you turn the car to run position? Eric www.geocities.com/eturbo924

Along with all else (fuel components and pressures ok, etc) be
sure the connectors for thermotime switch (under back of engine) and cold start valve/injector (back of intake manifold) are clean, connected and functional. Naturally, those two items should work, too. And the Auxillary Air Valve. G'luck. |

Try to start it with some ether. This will help isolate between gas or fire.
On a reply to 931 post, I mentioned ign switch. Put a meter between the coil's hot post (15) & ground & see if you have voltage while cranking. Might want to check motor to body ground strap, too. drew1 |

I am a big fan of new fuel pump relays. This seems to be my main non starting problem with my 924.

Thanks for all the replys!! I'm going to work on the car tomorrow and I will get back with more info.... I know the Fuel pump in the tank is not working- but I have read it is not nessary- (some cars didn't come with one) It has a crane ignition on it - no points- .... I will let you guys know tomorrow-

check your wires
i have a 1980 volvo and most of my problems was due to the crusty wires touching the metal, slight shorts that make the relays drop out.i replaced the harness, cruzin the 21 year old today still.
