Installing KONI's..mount nut...
how do you get the nut in the top of the strut mount out...tool ? or just take it to a garage with an impact wrench...the struts are already out of the car..I was reading somewhere not to unscrew that nut..I guess that was just when it was under pressure from the stuts being in the car...Duh !! how do you get the strut unscrewed from the mount...springs are not compressed have weltmeister 220# and they wobble between the perches already...

Wait....
If the struts are out of the car and the springs are attached.....STOP!!! The springs are still loaded and need to be compressed. If you just remove the top nut it'll end in tears. Seriously, I hope you haven't done it yet! If your still with us, go rent a spring compressor and remove the tension. Then you can try this to remove the nut.... I didn't have the right tools, so I used what I had available. An allen socket for the shaft, a deep socket for the nut, and a pipewrench. I put a 3/8 extension through the square hole of the deep socket, attached the allen socket from the inside. So now you can turn the shaft with a 3/8 ratchet. Then I held the nut with the deep socket using the pipe wrench from the outside. I did it this way a couple of times now. Or you could go buy the deep offset wrench designed for the job.

yes....absolutely DO NOT remove that top nut without compressing the spring with the proper tools, it'll end in a violent bloody mess.....
the springs are under compression. when that nut is removed the full pressure will send the top spring seat flying at a lethal velocity....... i would suggest taking the struts to a shop for them to disassemble since you obviously didn't know that, struts are very dangerous if you are not familiar with them......they'll probably charge you $20 to take apart......which will be WAY less than the hospital bill

Once the springs are compressed.... A few hits with the impact will do it... Or you can buy the special socket from Paragon...

it's so much harder doing it that way, rather than leaving the mount in the bloody car, and just disconnecting the sway bar so that the control arm will drop freely, and you can then remove the strut without the use of a spring compressor, or any of that nasty dangerous stuff
i'd almost stick it back in the car and start over but you'd still need an impact gun - now that it's out, you could take it to a shop and let them remove it, and then install the way i suggested |

2nd): if the spring is safely compressed with a spring compressor but you cannot get the top nut off (because the strut shaft just keeps turning with the nut) an impact wrench is best - but, you can also tap a socket wrench with a hammer to get the nut to start turning. |

Ideally it needs to be done on car ,get the right size socket ,and a big pair of pipegrips ,aswell as the right size allen key , ideally one u can use with a rachet
Use the pipe grip to grip the socket then the allen key turning in oposite directions ,should loosen nut pretty easy watch the wings incase the grips come off! Mark |

If they are adjustable Koni the above will not work. Are the struts going to be re used or are you replacing them? If they are keepers take them to a shop that has air and have them take them off with a impact gun. In the past I have grabbed the shaft with a LARGE set of vice grips that I put fuel line over the jaws so as not to damage them. On moderately stuck bolts this works but if you squeeze to tight you will damage the shaft.
If they are junk and being replaced the vice grip is your friend just lock them down and crank away. |
