968 tran leaking, DIY reseal and oil capacity/type?

Hello all,

I'm hoping to figure this out and get my baby back on the road. I have a '93 968 with 120k miles and the transmission is leaking pretty bad.

I changed the clutch previously and so am no stranger to pulling the transmission. I have not replaced seals on a transmission. My three questions are:

1) Is it possible to remove seal #8 (on the schematics) without pulling the transmission? Doesn't seem to be much room between the case and the spare wheel well.

2) If I end up having to pull the transmission is it crazy to think I can reseal this myself?

3) I can't seem to find how much oil to put in, and there are many opinions of which type. Amsoil seems to popular on this board, but can't find the type listed for 968.

Thanks in advance,
Eric

OK, Should've checked the Amsoil site. Answer number three is 6 pints. Think I'll go with 75w-90.

pulling the trans is not a big deal (though you don't have to pull it to do a clutch, so i don't know what that was about) - 8 hrs in and out

not sure if that seal will come out in place or not - probably better to pull the trans so as to get a better cleaning done anyway

you can reseal it yourself - not a huge job

that being said, if you have it out, this is the time to have it checked out and synchros changed and pinion bearing done - at that mileage, the box is likely due for an overhaul

california motorsports is the best around on these boxes - they are in scottsdale now, but have a deal with yellow freight, so it's quick and easy
