New Member With A 944

Hello everybody. My name is Sam, i'm from southern Virginia and I own a 1987 Porsche 944. I am new to Porsche, but not to the german market. I've been driving BMW's for the last 5 years. e32 750iL (v12), e38 740iL (v8), e46 323i (i6), e39 M5 (v8).

I've been working on my Porsche for about a month now, I purchased it not knowing if it could run. I did not know anything about these engines. I tried to start it up with the timing belt not tensioned. It jumped and I bent every exhaust valve. I took the head off and replaced it with a fresh head, head gasket, exhaust manifold gaskets, intake gaskets, and a new rotor and cap. I replaced the starter, and belts. I heard on these engines that the TIMING BELT is very serious...so I made sure it was tensioned along with the balance belt.

I've heard the DME relay is something to replace also but mine is fine for now.

Anybody have any advice for me at this point...I need an ignition coil now i'm not getting any spark.

Any advice with any other things to check for? This car hasn't been on the road since 2008. I want to have it rolling by spring 2011.

Another possible issue that could effect starting is a failed CPS (Crank Position Sensor).

Indeed worth carrying a spare DME relay just in case.

Welcome to the board and the exciting world of Porsches.

Have you heard of Clark's Garage and his garage shop manual? It's invaluable: Clark's Garage Home Page

If your car is properly timed with the fresh head installed, does it have spark? Does it have fuel?

@ racer - yes I have heard that the speed sensor and crank sensor could keep the car from starting.
@mikepellegrini - Thanks, I have definitely been using Clarks already before I signed up. It helped me find TDC in the flywheel hole, OT mark. It also helped me find it in the little hole next to the starter and also other things. I have a manual now though that I ordered from eBay. I get fuel, but no spark. I'm leaning towards the ignition coil. Yes it's DEAD ON TIME.
@ B944 - I have a Naturally Aspirated 1987 944 Base Model with an Autothority chip, mildly ported head. (na)
