Air flow meter adjustment

How is the black plastic cover held on the air flow meter??? I need to adjust the spring tention on the air flap and don't want to tear the thing up doing it. Also any good way to check air fuel ratio with out a dyno?? Any help would be great...

It is just held on with silicone . Use a razer to cut through the silicone. Spring getting tired with old age? (Mine did.)

It breaths better!!!

Not tired, just wanted a little less restriction on the inlet side of my intake. I got it off with no trouble. The service manager at the Porsche dealer told me not to move it more then three or four clicks because it would screw up the air fuel mixture. I don't have any way to check it untill next week when I go to the dyno. Thanks for the advice.

fireboss,
I've read of people changing the spring tension for performance reasons. I could see how it could make some changes in throttle response (but not horsepower). In the interest of completeness I offer a couple of data points on the subject:
Loosening the tension on the air meter door will "trick" the DME (computer) into running richer. The sensor will indicate that the engine is getting more air than it really is because the door will open further for the same amount of air. The DME will thus add more fuel to match the "phantom" air.
The air meter door is wide open by 4000 rpm and is ignored at that point by the DME. The spring tension will have no effect under those conditions. At that point the DME is using it's Full Throttle map and ignoring the air meter.

Interesting stuff. Please share what you find out.

Guys also do it to the Bimmers with essentially the same motronic system. If you search the Net you should find a couple good tech articles.

adjusting

If your car starts bucking like a bronco at low speeds around town, you've got it too loose!

Moved it 4 clicks.

I moved the spring four clicks. This was recomended by the dealer. I ran an auto cross on sunday and the car seems to run great. I will so a dyno run on the 26th and that will tell the tale...

4 clicks

well, these cars run extremely lean so a little enrichment can't hurt too much. You don't seem like the kind of guy to lug it around and load it up. LOL

any of you guys have trouble getting the black cover off your AFM? i cannot get mine off no matter how much i try..the silicon is completely stripped off on 3 of the 4 sides. it seems like it's suctioned on there. i tried to use a bottle opener to get one side kind of up but it just bends the cover...any ideas?
