83 944 NA A/C Compressor mounting Access

I am about to re-mount the A/C Compressor on my 83 944. Purchased last August and have had A/C, Alternator belt noise since. I discovered the aft bolt and sleeve were missing. My question is: would there be any benefit to pulling the Air Cleaner housing to gain access from above?

Thanks, Mike

Been a while but my rear bolt on the a/c mount was missing. i thin its possible to thread the bolt in by hand from the rear while under the car but i think i had to go from above to tighten the bolt down. I don't have the stock filter any more so im not 100% if i had to go from above.

Make life easier for yourself __remove the air box, then disconnect the J boot at throttle housing ,remove both J booth & AFS (air flow sensor). This way you'll have easy access to the A/C compressor from the top if needed, which I believe you will.

When I bought mine in November, one of the bolts mounting the compressor to the alternator was shorn off inside the hole. Had no jack, so the only way to get to it was from above; now, I can say with certainty that's the best way to go.

Now, if your compressor mounting bolts ever decide to unscrew themselves while you're driving along on the freeway and your compressor drops, suspended only by the hoses it's attached to, *then* you'll be wishing you had a cone filter so you could just re-mount it quickly at the end of a one-way street before the thunderstorm comes. That was one hell of a night.
