engine problems

1984 porsche 944 engine problems

While doing a radiator flush today. I started to have a new problem or should I say I have a new problem. While idling along the engine suddenly died. I went to restart it and it would start right up but then die. I could do this many times, but the results were always the same, Start then Died.

I took a look to see if a sensor came unhooked or got wet while I was flushing, but no there wasn’t a problem there. After reading on the web a lot I found someone else had a problem like mine and said if he disconnected the temperature sensor the engine would keep running. So I tried it, and yes my car would keep running, but it didn’t like you to give it any gas. If you did it would try to die.

So I started the car with the temperature sensor unhooked and it was running, I got out and plugged the sensor in and the car died right away. I thought maybe the sensor was bad.
I bought one at the NAPA store, then ran home in hopes of it fixing the problem, but nope still the same problem…

Just so you know I jumper wired the DME relay just so I would know it wasn’t the culprit. The fuel pressure looks good. Good spark. I’m afraid it may be the DME module.

Any help appreciated.

Check to make sure the air flow meter (AFM) connector is seated properly.

also make sure there are no air leaks after the AFM, this could also cause this problem. Retrace your steps from the flush if this problem came after that.

The engine died while I was finishing the flush job. It really didn't make sense why it died. Like I say it starts right up, but then dies, unless I disconnect the coolant sensor. then it will run about 1 or 2 minutes.
