Differences between early and late shifter and knob?

I rebuilt my shifter this past weekend (per 944online.com HERE), and it went well. On my early car, I ended up using a late shift knob, which is made of rubber. But my early knob is MUCH heavier, and made of metal and hard plastic.

I think I'm going to change back to the early knob, as I like the feel of the heavier shifter (but it needs a new boot). Is this normal - are all late shift knobs just rubber?

The origional knobs were metal with rubber inserts to connect to teh shift lever.

The new replacement parts are a cast rubber knob covered in leather... I have the new style in each of my cars and dont really notice a difference!
