Question Fuel Tanks, steel or rubber ??

Hi guys,

One of the early posting, is talking about fuel tanks and being
rubber.

Which models/years came out with these tanks??

I have a 86 924S which has a steel tank. But I think it has a
leak, so I am starting to look for a replacement.

Also any indication of prices would be great.

Hi,

I have 87 924S with leaky gas tank, too. I was told the new tank would cost 1100.00. When I called this shop down in Pompano, Fla.,where specializing in new/used Porsche parts, every tank he had for my car has same leak, he said. I guess it is common problem for our cars.

I also run into the problem of having rubber hoses being very brittle, and cracking, causing fuel smell in the cabin.

Check my post regarding to cracked fuel tank. On that thread Matt says he has used tank available. I don't know the asking price.

good luck,

Maachan

Thanks

I will use the price as a ball park figure.

Interesting to hear its a common problem and the price of a new one is so high.

Don't you still need to remove the tank to apply the sealant. What about a product called 'PETSEAL' which seems to coat the inside of the tank. Anyone used it ???

Hi,

I have used a tank sealant on my motorcycle's tank. The kit had the tank prep and sealant. Tank prep is to remove the rust in the tank. Make sure you remove all of rust in the tank. Also make sure you spread the sealant everywhere in side the tank. In order to spread the sealant, you need to have tank removed from the car.

My bike's tank developed a leak a few years later, though.

I think the sealant alone does not have enough strength to hold pressure that the tank will develop on cars. The tank is not vented to out side, like motorcycles and airplanes.
