What else to check?
I am going to replace the clutch in my '83. The timing belt was done about a year ago with the water pump. The car has near 90K and I have gone thru all the paper work from PO and havent seen anything major, belts, oil...ect. I was planning on doing the following while under the car.
1. replace trans fluid 2. replace RMS 3. re-pack CV,s 4. re-pack wheel bearings F&R 5. paint calipers 6. brake job 7. SS brake lines 8. short shift kit 9. filters and oil I would like to shorten the shifter but still keep factory knob, just to make it easier to get to radio. Still debating struts and shocks. It is a week-end toy and stays pampered in the garage. I would like to get it to up to use as a DD, no plans on DE's or racing, occasionally a little sprited on the interstate. SO.......what did I miss or forget about? |
If your going to repack the bearings you might as well just replace them. Do it the same time you do brakes since you have to take the front off to do the front rotors.
I would add a full tune up...plugs, wires, distributor, rotor unless it has been done recently. |
Check all vacuum lines for looks and leaks - replace as necessary...

good time for speed and ref sensors if they are over 10 years old or brittle \ cracked connectors

This is a great time to cut-out the sensor holes on your bellhousing. It makes it a whole lot easier to get off for future jobs.

Also a good time to enroll in anger management classes. And purchase some stock in GOJO cleaners.
Good times ahead |
I don't know if this was in the plan for the clutch job. BUT while you have the bell housing off, new pressure plate, new clutch disc, new RMS (already mentioned), new throw out bearing. and clutch fork bearings. While you have the flywheel off, have it resurfaced. Make sure to clean off the clutch fork and inspect for cracks. I had to replace mine because it was cracked :( Use moly lube in the bearings and pivot points. You'll need it for the CVs anyway.
When you drop the transaxle, I found it easier to unbolt the carrier from the frame, others will disagree. |
