Cleaning Gasket Material off Aluminum

So I have a 1987 944 Turbo. Replacing the gasket on the oil pan. I was told to remove the gasket material left on the pan and block with Roloc discs. I found at the auto store there are the bristle type and the pads. So having never used these I am nervous as you know what about damaging the surface..... What have others used to clean these surfaces. The engine is in the car by the way

Dont use the roloc discs on the block, only on the oil pan side. There is no room really to use the discs around the girdle and there is no way to cover everything without getting debris all over the place. I used a razor blade (carefully) and liberal amounts of brake cleaner to clean the block mating surface. A brillo pad would work well also. There should not be much stuff to clean off as the gasket is rubber, at most you will get some leftover silastic sealant on the corners of the pan from the factory which cleans up easily.

On the pan side, the roloc discs make quick work of everything.

Dito on the roloc disks they leave material that could damage the motor. I also use a single side razor blade and when most of the gasket is removed you can use the razor blade on edge in almost a 90 degree to the surface and scrap the bloke clean.

I find green scrubby pads (as sold for scrubbing pots, scotch-brite IIRC?) to be great, pretty much impossible to injure the aluminum with them.

In the process of rebuilding my 931 motor, have lots of aluminum bits to clean...
