Sounds like the bushings and bottom ball pivot (nylon) on the shifter itself. The Tranny mechanisms are out in the elements and even though mine were weathered, when I put the tranny back in (my shifter bushings and ball were tight) I still had a positive shifter.

Some people try to turn back their "odometers." Not me. I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

Also make sure the set screw is tight on the trans. end of the shift mechanism.

Cheap and easy fix: make sure the 2 bolts holding the shifter mount on the torque tube are tight. This plate holds the ball cup and if those bolts aren't tight your ball wont stay put...heh...

Just pull back the shift boot and the insulation and have a quick look.

Most of the time it is the lower nylon cup bushing at the base of the shift lever, and along with that there is a stud of types that juts off of the shift lever, and to that is attached the shift rod coming from the back. One can notice when this stud/attachment arm is worn and rounded and causes sloppiness in the shifting. Also check the inside of the cylinder attachment at the end of the shift rod. If this part is all wallowed out on the inside where it attaches over the stud of the shifter lever the slop in the shifting will be greater.

One can replace the lower ball cup bushing and the shift lever fairly easily. The shift rod that is attached to the shift lever is a little harder to replace.
