oil pressure

my 944 85/5 has no engine noises etc but after highway driving and stopping at intersections the oil light flickers at around .5bar i have changed the pressure switch and also the oil pressure relief valve to the new design i'm running 15w50 redline synthetic. when cold she runs at 5bar solid and then when warmed a little idles around 3bar to 4bar but the presure flicks up and down in .5 bar increments.
Has anybody any ideas please..

It is normal for the oil pressure to drop quite a bit warm and idling (especially with the clutch in) but I can't say I've seen it as low as .5bar. Maybe a little under 2 is the lowest I've seen it.

When it is at .5bar is the little red light on?

Others should chime in to give insight to a safe warm idle pressure.

Be safe, have a good evening!

Cheers

What part of the country do you live in? How many miles on the engine? Is the temperature outside 40degrees f or below when this is going on?j

Mileage on the motor is a good question. I have run a 2.5 in a 24 hour enduro, and the idle pressure never went below 2 BAR in the pits. Cracked pickup tube?

That "flickering" of the pressure gauge makes me worry about rod bearings... is said to be typical (and has been in my one case, on a 924S)...

oil pressure switch

I had that problem with my '88T last summer, I went threw two of the off brands oil pressure switches before I realized( with the help of this forum) I had to get the OEM switch. If you don't have the OEM, about $150., than your not going to get an actuate reading.

So is the pressure at warm idle 4bar or .5?
The way I read it was that after changing th OPRV & sender, it is 3 to 4 bar warm. That is pretty good.

Just went through this with my 968. Anyone want to buy an aftermarket oil pressure sending unit? Porsche OE is the only way to go on this. I picked mine up for just under $100 from Sunset Porsche.

Thank's for the replies. The car's only driven between may to september with 140k kms
the light flickers on and of for a few seconds after comming to a stop and engine hot. 1000rpm and above pressure stays 3 to 4 bar when car driven locally not highway light doesn't flicker on. the weired thing about this is change of brand oil seems to change the frequency of the symptom I always used mobile 1 20w50 had no symptom. now not available here in toronto had to use 15w50 now signs of symptom castrol 15w50 syntech always there now trying redline from last season 15w50 occasional sign but flickering needle .5 bar iether way persists.on idle it will read say 3bar then jump .5bar and back etc??

I think you hit on your problem. You changed the Oil Weight from 20W50 to 15W50 and the Brand. Go back to using a 20W50 and see if that cures your oil pressure problem.

Cheers,
Larry

Check the wires. My oil pressure gauge flickers all over the place right now and it's being cause by bad wires. I have just been to lazy to fix them, but I know the oil pressure is fine.

Your car & motor is now twenty- seven years old the motor probably has never been redone in all those years, why don't you try some good old dino oil (Valvoline Racing VR1 20w-50.You migth pick up 1 to 11/2 bars of oil pressure with it.

Read entire thread:

Update:
Still steady--no low rpm bouncing and hot engine freeway pressure 4+psi steady
