'85 1/2 With a Backfire

Ok, calling all 944 Guru's- I just picked up a beautiful, garage kept, 1985 1/2. Everything on this car works! However, when I turn it off, more times than not, I get a backfire. The car sat for 8 years under a cover in a garage, but it started right up with a new battery. Everything seems to be connected. Any ideas? Thank you for your help!

Sounds like a great find! Congrats.

However, if it sat for 8 years, before you do anything at all, please change the cam and balance belts - ASAP.

You've got an interference engine there, and if the cam belt breaks, you're gonna have some very unhappy valves and/or pistons.

The maintenance interval is usually 3-4 years or 45,000 miles. 8 years is about double the life expectancy, so you're living on borrowed time. I wouldn't even start it once more before changing the belts!

As far as the backfire is concerned, it could be a whole lot of different things.

But first, the belts!

The Kevlar timing belt is on order. Until it gets here, I'm hoping to get the backfire fixed.
Thanks!

My 944 , acquired Xmas 2011 was running on a belt set from 1999
The balance belt was broken and jammed ; the timing belt was severely cracked - the PO had dodged a bullet for sure and I held my breath of the drive home...
I've still got the original clutch , which one day will go bang .

Rubber sucks!

Short reply this time.
Could be a leaky fuel injector or a degree off time.
