Have a odd whining noise coming from my trans (944S). At low speeds and when the car is stopped regardless if the clutch is engaged or not there is an intermittent whining noise coming from the trans. - is it the pilot bearing, and if it is what would happen if it failed??? if anybody knows Please respond. THANKS

If it is coming from the transmission itself, it probably isn't the pilot bearing - that is on the backside of the engine.
First off, I would check and change your tranny fluid - SWEPCO makes a great one. The symptoms you describe could have several causes - please provide more information - any vibration in the pedal, hard shifting etc?? AFJuvat |

maybe it is coming from the forward portion of the car i can't pin point it but the car shifts fine ,no problems- just that whine which varies in intensity, but it doesn't happen every day

Ok, first thing then it to locate the source of the noise - Transmission, back side of the engine, front of the engine. center of the car, etc.
I'm not trying to give you the run around, but without a good location, the possibilities for a strange whining noise are almost endless. How does the car run otherwise? - any other strange problems you've noticed? AFJuvat |

Considering i'm pretty much sitting between the clutch assy and the trans i can't determine exactly the noise is coming from. to describe it in alittle more detail you know when you down shift and get a gear whine, well it sounds like that , but the pitch of the noise varies- maybe its a resonance from the gears in the trans. All in all the cars runs great no problems shifting or with the clutch.

Try raising the car on a hoist and run the car in gear while someone underneath pinpoints the exact location where the noise come from.
