Transmission trouble on 968

I cross posted this on a couple of other places, just trying to get some thoughts on it before I do anything, hopefully very soon. Had it towed to a shop, where it is waiting now.

Felt something odd going down the interstate and pulled over. After cranking back up, car operates normally in first gear, but stalls if I try to start in any other gear, including reverse.

Shifter feels normal, but have to fight it a little to get in gear other than first.

If I take it out of gear, it will not roll.

Seems like transmission is staying in first. Maybe shift fork is broken?

Car is a 94 968. 258k on car and tranny, unknown miles on clutch. Tranny was apart maybe 2 years ago for synchro in 3rd gear.

Thanks for any help!

-Bart

Some 944 owners report a similar problem and often it is just the shifter linkage that has become loose.
