Actually broke an O2 sensor wrench today

Hi All,

Yes I am finally getting around to changing my O2 sensor, went to the auto parts store and bought an O2 sensor wrench. I soaked it with WD40 first and let it sit for 30 minutes or so, got the wrench ond...nothing.

A little inventive leverage and additional force resulted in the head of the wrench splitting in two (can't even find the piece that came off).

So what is the solution for a frozen O2 sensor? I hate the idea of blowtorching anything on my car (especially in my garage) so I am definitely stuck (pun intended).

Any ideas or do I admit defeat and bring it to a pro?

Thanks,

GHEN

Initially I couldnt get mine off even after soaking it in pb blaster. So I went for a 20 minute drive, sprayed some pb blaster carefully, and managed to get it out. It was still tight but I believe the heat from driving made it easier.

+1 on PB Blaster. It has worked much better than WD-40 for me. Kroil may be even better.

Spray & drive daily for awhile.

If that didn't work for me I would just take it in - wouldn't cost much.

wd40 only works for the mildest of rust.

pbblaster, kroil are good off the shelf solutions.

i've heard some ppl swear by 50/50 mix of atf+acetone.

Get it hot by driving or a mapp gas torch works well in lieu of a big torch. Sometimes the threads come out with the sensor then you have to weld a new bung on.

I am a believer in Kroil - it has always worked for me. Grab a torch and a can or Kroil - heat, spray with Kroil, repeat, repeat, repeat - you will get it out (99% of the time - you don't want to hear about the other 1%).

I had to use PB blaster and a propane torch and a shovel(as a heat shield).
