Sitting in a Navy barrack in Virginia Beach talking about cool random cars we had never seen in a long time. I remembered seeing the 944 in Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed as a kid but never one in real life. I went on craigslist out of curiosity expecting them to be expensive but found a nice running 1983 Guards Pink 944 for $2,200. Dad picked it up for me and the rest is history. He always says I should have just bought a Honda Civic and not have to worry about all the work I do, lol.

My dad had been wanting a Porsche for a long time, he set out to pick up a nice 944 found a one owner car that the dad had passed from son to son for their collage years. The youngest son didn't want to drive the Porsche he was set on a truck. My dad said he knew it was the right car with in 50 feet of the test drive so he bought it and fell head over heels for the car more and more every time he drove it, what ever the car needed he fixed didn't mater the cost. I ended up inheriting the 944 after he passed away. I couldn't bring my self to do any thing with the car till 2 years ago my brother in law told me I better do something with it. I now have had it painted, timming belt and a corner of the bed room full of parts waiting to be installed. If I fell like I want to be close to my dad I just go and work on the Porsche and it makes me remember my pops. My screen name is a tribute to my dad (pops 83 944 ) I will alway miss him but I will never give up his/our Porsche!!! Thanks for listing to my rambling

$750 and a desire for a classic car project. The '87 924 was--to me--an incredible find given its pedigree. One year later it still is a work-in-progress; however, it runs and runs well. Along the way it has allowed me to satisfy the desire since childhood to be an 'auto mechanic'. Still learning, still need lots of help every once in a while, but loving every minute of it.

I'd always been a Corvette fan. When I was hit head on in my 1974 convertible (I was sitting at a red light) it was totaled. Broke the engine off the transmission and tore off the front drivers side wheel. There's no sound like fiberglass exploding! I didn't want to go the Vette road again. They were getting too expensive and ugly. I liked the early and mid years. A buddy of mine was starting a used car super store and took a 1983 Guards red 944 in on consignment, I knew where the insurance money was going. Had the car for a couple of years. Sat in the garage for most of it. Wife didn't like to drive it, she's height challenged, and I drove my truck for work, yada, yada. Sold it on Ebay. I still had the "itch" for a 944. It was a mistake to sell the 83. Two years ago this coming March I saw what was to be my car up for sale on Ebay. The rest is history.

i hate porsches, and almost didn't buy this one because it was one, but i wanted a sporty 2 seat, rear drive, manual trans, ragtop, with power steering, air, power windows, yada yada, that could carry 2 sets of golf clubs, a weekend of luggage, 2 cases of wine, and the wife. there just wasn't anything else that could do it all.

I had been into Datsun 240Zs and 280Zs for 25 years and just figured out that more time and money was spent on rust prevention, and irradication, than was spent on the mechanicals so I got sick of getting rust flakes in my eyes.
I was looking for a replacement car that didn't look like I was a boy racer, and just happened to look on ebay at 944s. I found a really nice 83 Porsche 944 up North of Detroit that had no rust, and had been taken care of all it's life rather than left to rust in the driveway like most Datsuns. |

So far the best reason seems to be from Pops 83 944. To each his own, but I really like that story.
Mine was sort of a graduation gift from UD. The lines on my original dream ride (924 GTS?) were too sexy not to love. The flaired/blistered fenders was what won me over. The 944 just finished off the package. Had posters in my dorm room of the 944... along with the obligatory half naked women as you would expect in most dorm rooms. Anyway about 9 months after graduation (took us that long to convince my mom we were responsibile adults) my dad and strolled into a dealer and ordered a black 944. At the time I was working for him at our family repair shop. Then I landed another gig and we quickly changed our order to the black 951 I still have. We've been wrenching it together ever since. My kids are killing themselves to get their hands on it.

I was looking or a 2 door coupe, that was rear wheel drive, and had a standard transmission. Just wanted something fun, but the catch was, it had to have no rust or major body damage, and cost under $3000..... also no Wankel engines.
The 944 fit the bill, and I bought the 3rd one I went to go see.

My Porsche story begins with some luck and a bit of perseverance. When I was in high school and just getting my drivers license both of my parents were driving minivans. Thus the only two cars in the house were the family minivans. I could drive one or the other, needless to say it was the least cool car a high schooler could be caught in. A friend of the family had owned an 88 924S for quite some time and it had been about a year since I had seen him drive it. The car had broken down on him and he did not want to pay some garage a huge price to fix what they said was wrong with it. Any way to make a long story short, I asked, and he ended up giving me the car. It took me 3 months to go through the electronics (turned out the ecu was shot) and get the car running. All of a sudden I went from minivan to Porsche it was quite a change. 2 years latter in college I bought a beat up 911SC and drove it like there was no tomorrow. Last year I bought a 944 to use as my DD at school. I still own all the cars and never plan on owning anything else. Over the years I have collected all sorts of Porsche memorabilia and things, and have made many great friends on runs set up right here on pelican. I have even gotten a job offer or two from people I have met on runs. I can, with out a doubt in my mind, say that Porsche has in many very significant ways shaped my life. I would not be who I am today had I have not fixed that 924S years ago.
Regards Dave

Needed a second car immediately when we moved. Hated the POS Acura Integra that we had bought. Got rid of the Integra and picked up a 40k mile 944. Been hooked since then.

Mrs Holbert, wife of owner of Holberts VW Audi & Porsche inWarrington PA, Al Holberts daughter-in-law. (Al, son of Robert Holbert, who were a staple in Porsche racing history). Mrs Holbert would pick me up for school to help her set up her gym classes for the day day. She would pick me up a few times a month in her yellow 199? new Beetle that looked like a bumble be- painted a little to look like one. Last few days in 8th grade she would pick me up early and gor for drives in a 911. Fun times.

Had posters on my wall of all the cars and bikes I thought was awesome one of the cars was a white 944 (think an S2), never seen one on the road then dad got dropped off by one of his work buddies after a work shin dig and he fell out the door on a silver 951, his mate laughed then dropped the hammer and left darkies up the street and around the corner..... was awesome.

Although I've always respected the Porsche brand, Italian breeds have a special place in my heart. I acquired a 1981 308 GTBi years ago and it was a blast. Huge money for parts and service though. My wife loves the movie "Sixteen Candles" and you know the rest of the story.
Gawernator, I spent 6 yrs in the Navy (1983-1989), Torpedoman 1st Class (E-6). Most of it was spent in Orlando and Jacksonville, Fla although I did spent a few weeks on the USS Forrestal
