new tie rods/front alignment help
just put new inner and outer tie rods on after conversion to manual steering on 88 NA. how do i get the front end straight enough to keep from tearing up tires on the way to alignment shop. All input greatly appreciated

if you don't have a toe plates, just use a long enough 2x4 or angle iron. place it against the edge of the tire at center of wheel height. have a second person do the same on the other side. tape measure front of tire vs rear of tire.
u can get within 1/8" reasonably with just that. that's enough to drive a bit to the alignment shop. also depending on what wheels/tires you have, you may be able to eyeball toe. facing the back of the car, look at the front tire along the outside edge. move left/right until you can just BARELY see the front edge and the rear edge of the front tire. at that position, you should see the edge of the rear tire. if u don't see rear tire at all, you're way toed-in. if you see the middle of tread of the rear tire, you're toed out. of course this doesn't work if you're running substantionally different offset wheels or if you're running really big tires in the rear |
