advice needed: coolant leak

'87 944 na

pic attached

I noticed a drop of coolant (nice and clean looking) on the hose that goes from the water pump to the side rail (?). If the hose itself is OK, should replacement of the hose clamp fix this?

more to the point - if I remove that hose clamp, is it going to spray coolant out/require a bleed?

p.s: will coolant ruin rubber e.g. the steering boots - or is it just the same rubber as for the various coolant hoses?

Lol, I'm fixing my coolant leak tomorrow! Do you have records of the heater hoses/coolant hoses being changed? You might as well replace them all, maybe the HCV too at the same time. The hoses are inexpensive. That hose clamp looks hella rusted... you should maybe get new clamps too, also super cheap. I'm gonna guess that old rubber hose is bad. I also have no idea what that rail thing is called either.

Replace the entire hose along with that rusty clamp. I've seen no less than three of that same part get destroyed over the years on my car. It is due to the location where it gets blasted with heat all the time. If you can't wait, just get an equal length of heater hose at your local auto store. Relatively easy fix.

What do I measure on the hose clamp to get the right match in the catalog?

for our information, just looked in the PET. the first diagram* has:

the rail thing:
12 : 944 106 243 03 water tube

the hose clamps:
22 : 999 512 392 00 hose clamp 23-35 three needed
23 : 999 512 346 00 hose clamp 16-25 one needed

the hose:
11: 944 106 241 03 water hose

... BTW, been meaning to ask this... how the H is the PET supposed to be read, anyways? is there a tutorial or something? there are two more diagrams that look similar following this one and all the numbers/codes appear the same, so what do we look at to know what we need - without going fine-grain on the differences?

You're in luck. I found a spare water hose in the garage this morning. Here it is if you want to get a similar measurement heater hose. But if you're willing to wait, PM me your mailing address and I'll just send it to you on Monday:

There are several different models of engines that are in 944's.To the right you will see in the header,"model",find the model of your engine and choose the correct partwhen looking them up.

for this example - (page 48 of 391 in the pdf file), illustrations 105-05, 105-07 and 105-10 show the parts I am asking about. While the "Model" in the top left (hear me out) is "9442" for each diagram, I do in fact see now where the Description is "water cooling" without a part number, then all the way over to the right under "Model" are those things I always have seen like M44.05/06/07, M44.08/09, M44.10

so I guess M44 means "model 944", but then the "05/06/07", "08/09", "10" means ... what exactly?... I asked on another thread where to find the stamp on the engine, gonna do that as soon as I get a chance...

just a note here: the next diagram (p.50, ill. 105-07)

M44.40

the last diagram (p.52, ill. 105-10)

M44.50/51
M44.52

No problem. The correct part number is stamped on it but the cell phone pic is so bad it didn't even come close to showing up.

Haha the avatar is Gobler from Raiders of the Lost Ark. My favorite film. Ever.
