87 944S overheating

That 944S that I had that broke a chain guide and messed up my valves, finally finished it and started it, runs perfect, only one small problem: it's overheating. Gets pretty warm, and I undo the vent bolt a little bit and air/steam comes out. Did that a few times, getting air/steam every time, and a lot of it. I'm not sure that is just the air that was in the cooling system or if that is just the steam that forms when the car start heating up. Water pump had been working fine engine rebuild. Any suggestions?

Thermostat staying closed? Does the radiator hose the runs to the thermostat feel real hot when the car is warmed up like fluid is traveling through ok? Is it possible to put the headgasket on backwards thus covering fluid travel? I am not familiar with the S motors. Only other thing that I could think of is you still might have an air pocket in there.

Yep, the hose is indeed very warm. I don't think I put on the head gasket on wrong because there was really only one way that it could go on.

Sounds like the thermostat is operating correctly then. Was the head pressure tested on rebuild? Doubt it but there could be a crack in the head that is causing the raisng temp? I believe that to bleed the air out either the front or the back of the car should be raised to help get the air bubbles out when bleeding. I can't remember which though but I didn't have to do that when I did the water pump job on my 83 NA 2.5.

The head wasn't pressure tested, but I really hope that it doesn't have a crack. Well my driveway is sloped, so I'll try bleeding both ways.

Do you have a coolant pressure tester? Would be quite handy. Also a free loan from AutoZone. And you're supposed to raise the front up but I don't think it matters when you use a coolant pressure tester.

My bet is air in the system...get the front end up high when bleeding it.

was the intake and cover powder coated, and bleed it till coolant comes out.

No, they weren't was powder coated. I had a friend do it for me, blasted the whole thing used some high temp stuff.
