Damn PO!! Center console...
 

So the PO spray painted the center console with high gloss black paint and dirt just sticks to it and won't come off and it looks tacky.

My question is, is there anything I can do to refinish it back to original specs or at least a lot closer? I want to avoid buying all new console pieces.

I'd be very careful of most paint strippers because of the chance that they will melt the vinyl. There is an orange based stripper, I can't remember the name of it, that may work. Check at Lowe's or Home Depot for it. Test it on a scrap piece of vinyl to see what it does to it. Good luck.

OK, I'm a little more awake now. It's called Citri-Strip. It contains no methylene chloride. Stays wet (stripping/working) for up to 24 hours on the surface. You can use it inside, no nasty fumes. Let us know how things turn out.

rustolium has a line of rattle can paint that can also be used on plastic. Maybe buy a can of flat black and try it.

Yeah, I was thinking about the paint for plastic also. I think the old stuff would need to come off first. After it's removed I don't know if it could be re-dyed or not. Is it black or another color? I've re-dyed leather seats but not vinyl. It could be you could recover it like you would a cracked dash.

if you have vinyl to paint I would recommend SEM in a rattle can. They come in different colors. Rustolium has a line of paint that is different colors that is also suitable for plastic so they say and I have seen it at home depot.

That old paint will be very hard hard to remove without doing any damage to your vinyl.Remove the consol cover -wash with soap & water then get a can of SEM Color Coat Satin Black # 15243.First spray a thin coat,let it dry for about 30 minutes between each coats until you get the proper color finish.Should take about three coat to get it rigth.Pics of my shifter & boot done in Satin Black.:Dhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1362235755.jpg...Before (Grey)

Mike___ forgot to tell you,if possible find a small bottle of TANA (usually available at shoes maker shop) once wash treat your cover with it before spraying.It will help the SEM to bond to the old paint.Beware TANA is very strong & smelly so you'll have to do this in an open space wearing hands & breathing protection.This stuff dry very fast in about a (couple of minutes).Have fun:Dhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1362241485.jpg

You don't have the year of your car listed, but in the used parts site here a seller under "parts for sale" has a console in black for an 88 for sale.

I agree with the above. Just paint over whatever happened.

Probably be the way to go ,buy a use one but 95% of the time it will still have to be redone if its use.:D

Came out great Mike.Have you redone your shifter boot Satin Black or your going with another color.:D

Don't use high gloss on anthing. I beleive that's why its sticky. I made that mistake in another car and it always stays tacky.
This time I used rustoleum 'Satin' black on my center console and it looks great.. a little shine but, no stickiness.
