Battery Question

It hit 60 degrees today so I took the 944 out for a 5 mile 80 MPH drive. When I started the volts read 13 volts. When I got home the volts read 12 volts. Is that normal or is my alternator on the way out.

Should be reading 13.5 + your alternator migth not be on it's way out but I'll suspect the voltage regulator migth be.

That sounds better than the alternator. Where is the voltage regulator located.

Also try to make sure it's not just the gauge, my gauge doesn't read that accurately

Has the lower suspected voltage actually given you problems like hard, or slow starting ? I would check the voltage at the battery terminals before a ride, and then after a ride using the headlights, heat, and stereo to see if the system is being drawn down.

An autoparts store can test the battery and alternator while still in the car for free.

I w ork for batteries plus.
Your alternator should be pushing 13/14 volts. Any lower then its starting to go. Your battery is a 12volt rechargable. A fully charged battery should be 12.5volts or more.
If it is bellow 12.5 then its not getting a full charge.
Deal with this on a daily basis.

This is a new battery. I do think it is effecting starting the car. It acts like it does not have enough power to start the car.. Is there a right up on what has to be done to get to the voltage regulator.

Batteries can all be different. Qualities. Thickness of plates. Cold cranking and cranking amps. If yiu s ok ent cheap its probably not ment for it.
Take it in to where you got it and tell them your car is having a hard time starting. If your battery is getting a 13volt charge your fine. If bellow that I'd take a look.
Check your spark plugs and cap/rotor.could be missing a spark.

Couple things to takr into mind with this.

Please get this fixed. If you have trouble before fixing, the battery should be charged and then started. Do not attempt to jump start the car. It is very possible that jump starting will cause problems with the ECU.

Have your FLAPS test the alternator before you try to replace the voltage regulator.
