944 factory window tint

I know pretty much nothing about window tint but I understand they are measured by some percentage system. What would the number be for stock factory 944 window tint?

Don't know the % of the tint from the factory, but if you got a (tinted window) law in your state go to any police station, they have a machine that will tell you excactly what % tint is in your windows. And also what is acceptable if you want to tint them.

There was no stock window tint.

Dealers may have added it, but the factory never did. Well, at least not more than the mild band at the top of the windshield.

Weird... only tinting I saw was the windshield. I know new Porsches have a "dye" in the glass to make it a little bit darker than plain auto glass.

I swapped on a tinted hatch last year. its the darkest tint we are legally allowed at 35% meaning it lets 35% of light through (VLT or something). we arent allowed to tint our front windsrceens but i've been meaning to get my side glass tinted to match. as it is in certain types of light the hatch looks darker than the factory glass and sometimes (especially in shadow) the factory glass looks as dark as the hatch.

Interesting, because I've never in my life seen a 944 with tinting that hadn't been added by an owner.

And it's not listed on any option code list I've ever seen. There is an option code for "green side glass" and for the tinted band at the top of the windshield, but nothing at all for dark tinting.

Sorry, but these cars absolutely did not come with dark tinting from the factory. The "tint" in Porsche's codes is a mild green and not anything like what most people think about "tinting" today.

Semantics I'd say. I would argue the stock glass isn't 100% uncoloured, it is tinted with colour which cuts out a % of sunlight.

The 911 has very mild green tint and the 944 is a little darker. I was hoping to get it a little darker on my 912. They probably don't make tint as light as I want so I'll just forget about it.
I'm thinking about the sort of tint that's fairly standard on the back windows of minivans and SUVs; a mild grey that's close to what the neutral density filter for my camera looks like.

The greenish hue of the 944's glass is a by-product of a manufacturing process that causes the glass to reflect a modest portion of infrared light, which helps keep the cabin cooler. At least, I'm assuming that's why, since similar green-hue glass is used in construction for that purpose. It's a characteristic of the glass itself, a result of specific compounds added when the glass is formed.

When you go to a shop and ask them to "tint the windows" though, all the shop does is bond a thin plastic film to the inside of the glass and that won't have the same properties as the factory glass, even on the off chance you can get a similar color.

Even with the same amount of visible light transmission, a grey tint from a shop would not look the same.

All that stuff aside, a 944 looks great with well installed tint.

Jackson, try to go to a FormulaOne authorized tint shop. Lifetime warranty transferable. There's a mom and pop place here that did both my 944's and are awesome (and cheap). Tint is high quality. I have the 5% drug dealer tint though, it looks good with the Guards Red. They do make a light film like what you're talking about. I think it's 50%
