Unhappy Odometer Issues

The odometer on my 1984 944 stops and after 50 miles or so starts again for about 50 miles or so then stops and so on. I placed a washer at the shaft so it does not disengage therefore the problem must be somewhere else. Any ideas for remedying the problem?

Take it out, put drill on the shaft and hope it doesn't work so you can find the issue. Nothing's worse then intermittent problems.
