CV question
I have an 85.5 automatic trans car with a clacking right CV axle. I wonder what the procedure is to check it out and rejuvenate it? It was recently flipped but I don't think they cleaned and greased it properly. Hopefully it can be recovered because I don't want to spend $300 on a new one.

well...jack her up (please be safe)
Inspect and check the torque on the hex bolts. They tend to loosen up and if it was recently serviced that would be my first guess. If they have come loose clean the bolts and threads and reinstall if your bolts are all good. I like replacing this hardware as it is cheap insurance but most shops don't. K. Next inspect the boots for tears and rips slung grease, that sort of thing. Then check the shaft for play. Or rather, play with your shaft a bit. We are all adults here right? Let me know how much fun you have and what you find. If you do need to torque the bolts do it in stages and then road test, re-torque and stripe the bolts with paint so you can tell if they loosen up in the future with a quick visual inspection.

Safety tip!
please note: check it "soon" as it may be a "safety issue".
When I say "soon" I mean now, and when I say 'safety issue" I mean potentially life endangering catastrophic failure if those bolts are loose and let go while you are in traffic.

The bolts and boots look good. Regarding checking for play, (I think it is properly described as torsional play) one end is tight and the other end has play.
Is this repairable with cleaning and greasing, or do i need the pelican CV joint kit ($74), or should I just buy a new axle? And they are around $300 new since it is an automatic. http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/images/Connect-Images/94433190100-M60.jpg Last edited by djnolan; 07-13-2013 at 07:38 AM.. |

I would think that that kit should do it for you. Can't really be sure until you take it all apart and inspect. The shaft itself is usually OK but check it for true while you have it out. You can grab a core and build that if worse comes to worse. A new one for 300 isn't all that bad either.
