Apparently if the crank girdle won't sit flush with the front of the block an oilstone can be used to true it up - if bashing its head in with a mallet doesn't make it co-operate.

Got a call from the shop today. CJ (that really is his name, despite how Dukes of Hazzard it may sound) had some fun with the spare head I'd donated and is ready to do this one for real.
