Need a 944 Motor

The motor broke on my 84 944 NA. I can part out the car or put in a new motor. A local shop here in St. Louis will sell me a used motor, no guarantee what shape it's in, for $950 and install it for $2000 - $2500. That's with the broken motor already out of my car. I can get a long block from Huntley Racing for $3500 plus core and put it in myself. I'm looking for a happy medium, a used motor that's got a fairly new waterpump and timing belt and decent compression, something I can get two years out of without major repair. Anybody out there know of a place selling such things?
I've found that the local repair shops have a definite lack of interest in doing this job. The one that did quote me the price really wants to sell me another car and get mine so they can have the parts.

Engine

Hi Lew,

Just exactly how bad is your current engine? If it's not completely terminal, is it rebuildable?

Personally, I think if you can put the engine in yourself, it's probably within your capabilities to rebuild it (or take it to a machine shop / engine builder for the parts you can't handle. It's also a great way for you to learn the car.

Just my two cents,
Fletch

I lost all my oil pressure. Main bearings and even the upper end are gone. I think it would make a good boat anchor now. The motor is almost out of the car now, I just have to wrestle with the torque tube and exhaust nuts and bolts. I've rebuilt motorcycle and VW beetle motors, and even a 318 Dodge V8, but it's been years, I really don't want to go through that stuff again. Besides, I'm too old to learn anything. Putting in a complete motor is about all I'm up to.

We have a very low mile motor for sale. It has NO LEAKS!, and clocks about 80k on the clicker. We offer a full three month warrantee on the complete long block.

Take Care!

Really?

Hmmm.....

What year? How many miles? How long out of the car?

I've been toying with the idea of buying a known good engine for my race car just to get it on track in the minimal amount of time and cost and build a full race engine later.

Stinks, I had a perfectly good engine in my '85 when it was totaled. Course I'm farther away then would be practical...

I still don't know whether I should of kept the wreck or not. In retro spect, I know they'd of let me switch the Fuch's off for standard phonedials - I should of asked. To them - they are both alloy wheels.
