Oil change with ramps?

Hi all,

I have been thinking about getting some ramps to do an oil change. I injured my back in A-Stan and jacking the car up is one of those things that hurts.

However I am thinking that with the car up on ramps will that effect how the oil drains? My thinking is it won't be an issue because it is still all in the pan so no big deal right?

Your thoughts are welcome,

GHEN

First off, never go under the car when it is on a jack alone. At least use jack stands.

That being said, I've been changing my own oil for 25 years on ramps, and so far so good. Safe, convenient, easy to do. Recommended.

Emoore924,

Thanks for the insight, I always use jack stands but it is good to be reminded.

Perhaps I should have described my question better:

The ramps mean that the front of the car is raised & the rear remains on the ground; I am wondering if that will affect how the oil drains.

Thanks,

GHEN

Don't think so, you will still get the gusher upon removal of the drain plug. You may have a very slight amount of old oil left in the rear pan corner, but not enough to worry about.

Rhino ramps are perfect for an oil change.

You can alway drive to a decline so car is level when it's on ramp. I do this when changing diff oil to get the correct level

You will definitely need a ramp to get your bulging chest under the car. These are fail proof if you chock the rear wheels.

Ditto on rhino ramps, and they're great for other purposes. I don't have any issues with draining.

With my rhino ramps my bumper would scrape on them a little bit when pulling up and down. I just used a bunch of old newspapers stacked up to level it out and minimize the scrapeage when rolling on & off. I'm using a jack and stands nowadays though.

Thanks GHEN for being one of the good guys, if you were local I'd change the oil for you. I use a setup like djnolan to run up on my ramps to keep from scraping the front air dam.

Oh, and the drain plug for my car is at the rear of the drain pan, so the oil actually drains better on a little bit of an incline...
