ok my car needed a new evaporator so i picked up the whole a/c box. my question is do you think(me,myself, and I) that i could do this by myself? or should i have my mecahnic do it. he said it would be like 465.00 for everything new including evaporator. this is also converting it to new freeon and all of that good stuff, but since i have the evap. now he said it would be like 200 less what should i do??

Assuming he is competent, for 265 I'd let him do it. It depends on how much money 265 is to you and how much pleasure or displeasure you get out of doing it yourself.

Do you have proper tools to do the job? A/C work need them special tools, don't they? Like vaccume pump, high and low pressure gauge and such. If you have them, then why are you thinking of having someone do the job? If you don't have them then can you borrow from someone? Free? If I were you and don't have tools I will have someone do the job for me.

There are no special tools required for the airco. The only thing that needs special equipment AND knowledge is pressurizing the system (including changes on superheat etc). There are a few things that should be done by pro's. Though if have a deal for 265, i would really advise to go to the mech. He will make sure your system works and will keep on working for a long time. If you do it yourself you might end up forgetting something and using the wrong materials. And the evaporator is not the easiest part of the airco to change.
My advice: go to the mech for 265 (300 is even a nice price, if the deal is that he will deliver you a WORKING aico). |

Vacuum pump-$250 (or just the venturi for $40 + an air compressor.)
Pressure gagues-$50-$100 Flushing Cylinder with solution-$60 + an air compressor 3 lbs of freon-$15 oil-a couple of bucks If you have an air compressor then it might not be too expensive. Problem being it is somewhat involved. Not difficult, but just involved. If you want to do it yourself, then I get would suggest you get a copy of Haynes Auto A/C and Heating manual. Then go to http://members.tripod.com/early944/ and follow the links for Porsche's A/C conversion.
