Power Steering Fluid Burning?

Good morning,

Lately I've noticed a kind of whining motor noise every time I turn the steering wheel, and I suspect the PS pump is either going out or there's a leak somewhere since there are lots of tiny bubbles in the PS reservoir.

I also just noticed this morning that there's some faint whitish smoke coming from around the reservoir/cam tower area, and it smells somewhat like burning oil. Personally I don't think I have to worry about the cam tower considering the known PS issue, but I'd like to get someone's opinion on the matter just to be sure.

Thanks,

Jon

It could be that oil or power steering fluid is getting on the exhaust manifold, which is more than hot enough to burn it off.

If you have a power steering leak, try to get it fixed before it gets on (and eats) your bushings.

jtehfreaks,

If this is the first time you work on the PS system, here is a list:

1. Change the PS reservoir--it has a filter inside.
2. Get the new short PS hose from the reservoir to the PS pump and fitting.
3. If this does not stop the bubbles in the reservoir, Rebuild the PS pump with the Pelican kit -$20
4. The burning smoke near the reservoir could be a bad oil filter gasket and it drips.
or a bad cam gasket. Go under the car and follow the drips. There is a UV dye kit that works well to find oil leaks and saves time.

Sorry about the wait on the reply, work and school tend to be good distractions. Got the parts ordered and on their way except for the short PS hose. I haven't been able to find exactly what you're talking about on Pelican Parts, but I believe I found it on 944online here. Seems a bit pricey for a hose but if it's recommended, I'll go for it. I've heard there are some issues with fitting the new hose too, any tips or pointers for this hose in particular? I can't imagine too much since it is just a hose.

V/r,

Jon
