'82 944 emission problems
Hi!
I just had my car on a MOT, the emission was so high that it was not possible to read the value. The exhaust smells badly gas, and fuel milage is bad. The exhaust is black under full throttle.      This picture shows the black smoke collected from 20mins of driving. -Since its a early euro car it does not have a o2 sensor. -Fuel pressure is good, the check valve is bad but this should not give this problem. -AFM is checked as described to Clarks-Garage and found okay Altough my multimerer is old and slow. I might open it and give the wiper new tracks and solder in the extra wiper over the pickup. Then check it again with a new multimeter. -DME temp sensor had low resistance, changed it. -New sparkplugs -New airfilter -New distrubutor cap and rotor EDIT: Just checked sylinder compression. It looks good. 180-220psi. Altough when turning the engine, the sparkplugwires sparked against the head over the "sparkplug hood" Could this be the problem? Just a really bad ignition because some of the electric current to the sparkplugs leaks to ground? I have noticed a ticking noise in the engine, but i have always thought this was the injectors opening. Anybody got an idea hat could be the problem? Last edited by Skorp; 02-28-2014 at 04:13 AM.. |

Try replacing the fuel pressure regulator. Doing that can sometimes magically clear up a number of symptoms. And if you've got arcing then new plug wires are pretty much a given.

I will order a pressure regulator, check valve, new sparkplugs and sparkplugwires.
The fuel pressure seems good though, it is so cheap its no problem to replace. |

Sounds good. I think those parts will solve most or all of the problem. I think the wires are the main culprit.

Definitely plug wires will cause issues... the spark escaping means your plugs aren't discharging further down the wire. Once those are fixed, then I would continue trouble shooting. No use replacing parts that aren't proven to be faulty as it's just a waste of money.

The cheapest place i could order local, they wanted to charge 360usd for the sparkwires so all these parts are cheaper than only the wires.
I will order a spare DME relay, shift bushings, fuel filter, fuel pump check valve, a linear throttle cam, spark plugs, sparkplugwires and a fuel pressure regulator from pelicanparts.  The only thing i might not need to change is the fuel pressure regulator.. Its so cheap anyways its no problem to change it just to be sure it works! Last edited by Skorp; 02-28-2014 at 02:22 PM.. |
