speedometer bouncing
got an 87 944S I resurrected after it had sat for a few years.
initially the speedo did not move, then started bouncing, then reading but too low, then stopped, now just bounces. I checked the sensor and the connector is on good. anyone know if this is more likely a speedometer issue or the sensor? |
Usually the gears. Pelican sells some gears.

Speedo cable. Remove speedo (or cluster, after pulling the steering wheel) disconnect cable. Cut connector off dead cable at speedo end and duct tape new cable to it. Draw the old one carefully through the firewall and the new one will follow. Remove DS wheel, pry off E-clip, tap the hub cap off and pull cable out of hub. Push new cable into hub (a little grease helps it past the grommet in the hub) and reinstall hub cap and E-clip.

Lubrication?
Since you said it had been sitting for years I wonder if it may be that the lubrication dried out like mine did awhile back. I have the mechanical speedo cable driving a mechanical gauge not an electrical sender. I don't know about the 87 944S gauge but if it is a mechanical gauge driven by the electrical sender it may be that the gears and their axles may just need a light smear of grease; mine did. I had to carefully pry back the crimp that held the speedo guts in the case and once inside carefully greased all axles and gears. While I had it available I dripped some cable lube down the cable.
My speedo needle doesn't bounce like it did before. It also would jump to a point and stick, randomly jumping or dropping and sticking as it pleased while I drove. Oddly, the odometer kept working smoothly though so I suspected that it was the gauge and not the cable that was dry of lube. Re-lubrication here and there fixed it with a penny's worth of grease (and lots of time). Avoid removing the speedo needle; but if you must, be sure to mark it for exact relocation. actually I dont think the ODO is working either. the 944S has an elec speedo sender on the tranny. already checked that connection. I have heard to be very careful if you remove the needle. fixing this item is not at the top of my list at the moment, but need to deal with it soon. |
