Question Automatic v. Manual

So, are there major difference b/t the auto and manual 944? I'm looking to buy a 944 N/A around the beginning of next year, and there seem to be a lot of autos around. It would seem to me that it would defeat the purpose of a 944, and I imagine parts/maintenance is higher. Whats the word? Anyone on this board drive or have drive an auto?

Drive a manual - work on them both.

The power is a little less on an automatic, but not really to speak of - you do lose some of the "control" a stick gives you.

Maintenance - the Automatic has a rubber flex disk to absorb vibrations - it WILL fail eventually. GIY you are looking at around $700+ in parts - to have it done by an experienced mechanic, you are looking at $1200 - $2000.

As with any 944, get a PPI before you put your money down.

You do NOT EVEN want an automatic. If you think a 944na is a tad slow off the line, just hobble it with a 3sp slush box. I've driven both, and I wouldn't have an auto, well maybe long enough to put in a manual.

If you have any aspirations to any type of track duty or even club racing, the manual is the only way to go. My 951 gets 30+mpg, I don't think the auto will be anywhere close. Add to that 0-60 in the high 5 to low 6 second neighborhood, and the auto just pales. I think I can put up with the chore of shifting for that type of fun.

I don't mean to demean those who own the autos, I personally wouldn't have one.

The manual also has a rubber damper in the clutch which WILL fail.......so they are even in that respect. The difference being that you can replace rubber clutch for one with springs and, as far as i know, the auto has to be replaced with the rubber. They are both usually good for 10+ years though so they won't have to be replaced very often.

Both models serve a purpose and are good at what they are designed for, with the manual being a bit more "sporty".

IMO you need a car with an ample amount of power to pull off an auto trans, which a N/A inline 4 just doesn't have.
