968 electrical fo paw

Not for the faint of heart! Pulled the alt/starter wiring harness out of my 80K semi-garage queen '92 968 cab this AM. Check out what I found when I pulled the wires out of the protective sheaths. No insulation just black crumbs. Wire strands shredded. The only wire intact is the blue ignitor wire. The battery to starter wire and ground wires seem O.K.. Where's Robby?? Help!!

Thank you so much! I shudder to think how many more 968's are out there with original wiring like this.

yup - quite a few.

i'm lucky (as i type this i'm reaching over really fast to touch wood) as my cars don't have a lot of miles on them, and they are both california cars, and almost never driven in the rain, so not exposed to the elements. i've seen some really bad ones though. the scary thing is when they short together, the car can start itself, and if it's in gear, drive right into your garage wall. happened to a friend of mine.

Update: Battery and starter checked out O.K.. Battery main ground cable not so O.K.! Finally talked with Robby and we are working on the cables kit. BTW main ground cable end connection is a b***h to find and disconnect. Now need to source new 3.5mm male bullet connectors for ends of the new 12V and ignitor cables at the firewall white plastic connector.
