How do I replace the Climate Control bulb?
Hello group,
I've had my 1986 951 for about 4 months and recently the Climate Control bulb had become "intermittent". It occasionally works, but more often than not, doesn't. I took the Climate Control out of the dash, thinking that the bulb would just plug in the back, but -- wrong!!! OK, so then I figured it was behind the black plastic cover on the back, but -- wrong!!!Leave it to Porsche to hide it somewhere inside with no way to replace it. Am I missing something here?? Do I have to repalce the entire Climate Control for the bulb to work? Inquiring minds -- and pocketbooks -- want to know!! Thanks for any help.... Jay

Geesh. You just had to ask about this. Just read a fairly extensive artical about the later 944 dash lighting and replacing it with diodes. Now where was it????

Yep. I think I remember reading that same article....didn't think much of it at the time because it was working perfectly......

Bikedewd, I think you can just pull off the knob, either the fan speed or temperature and push the bulb in a little bit, and twist. It should pop right out.

Thanks Ross,
It definitely is a loose bulb. I can push on the temperature control knob and the light will come on, but when I let off it goes out. I tried pulling on the knob, but it doesn't seem to want to come off....don't want to break anything -- do I just need to give it more muscle??? Thanks, -jay |

I was mistaken. You do NOT have to twist the bulb. Simply pull it straight out. I used needle nose pliers.
There are two metal contacts on the bulb that are folded aginst the glass at the base of the bulb. bend these out just a bit to ensure they touch the contacts in the unit itself. This should fix your problem. You say the bulb comes on when you push on the knob, so all is working fine but there is a poor electrical contact somewhere. Let me know how this turn out. .. you may want to clean the metal contacts on the bulb a little with fine sand paper or steel wool. maybe you can just gently srape the contacts with something metal, or a fingernail file.
