brake recommendations, 1986 turbo

I just ordered new Zimmerman drilled and slotted rotors for the front of my '86 turbo. The brakes are in dire need of a total rebuild. What are your recommendations for pad manufacturers and models based on D/D and sometimes autocross? I don't plan on tracking the car.

just posted to your other thread.

I rebuilt and repainted all my calipers on my 86.

but be aware not all the parts are still available. have to look it up, all the seal sizes are avail, but some of the scraper rings are NLA. the 86 caliper piston sizes are smaller than the next gen, dont recall if that started 87 or later?

a friend who ran a 951 on the track and street suggested I use Hawk Blue. they are harsh on the rotors, but good track and also street. some track pads have to get HOT to really work. learned that when going through different versions of Pagid pads on my 911 when I was running it at DE.

if only autocross, you dont have to worry about track pads, will never get your brakes hot enough to need them. and you will want a pad that grabs well for street and autocross.

I also added 3" cooling to the fronts.

again ... good luck.

I like what you've done. I'm still working of things that were neglected since the car arrived today, starting with the battery box and ordering brake disks. I have Hankook tires selected for the 18" 911 wheels that came with the car. I'm considering Hawk black pads, but haven't decided yet. Found a bunch of loose stuff under the hood including two vacuum lines and no rust in the battery box (wahoo). Sprayed it with truck bed liner anyway. It's an expected process but I have my vision on how it's going to end up and I'm getting pretty excited. I know, I know, 70 year old guys are supposed to be beyond getting excited, but then, I didn't get the memo.

Generally it is felt that drilled rotors are to be avoided. They can be bought quite cheaply but they crack too easily and have to be tossed quite soon. Conditions dependent.

glad to hear that. I am only 63 and hope to wrench/drive for quite a few more years.

I agree about drilled rotors for track cars. have been told the reason so many factory high perf cars have drilled is they work better in rain. as long as only street driving.

looking forward to your posts and good luck on progress.

Stay away from the drilled rotors ... they might look cool and aggressive but you're better off with slotted discs !
Sebro makes slotted models for our cars which I've ran on my 911 for a few years now and last year on my 944 race car,the brake dust doesn't build up in the holes like the drilled discs have a tendency to do and they also don't crack !

Cheers

I've liked my Porterfield R4S street pads with the Brembos. Not too noisy, not too dusty, predictable on the street, and they don't seem to mind getting occasionally incinerated at the track.

Got them and some Hawk pads for street and occasional autocross stuff. They seem to be the best suited for my needs. New Hankook tires today for the 18" wheels and a myriad of little things that need to be fixed (PO's didn't seem to be as manic as I am about finish). This is fun.
