Front Blinker Removal
Didn't think I'd be seeking help this quickly but went to pull the front bumper on my 86 944 to decompress the shock. How do I remove the blinkers? Removed lens and only found 1 screw holding the housing. Where is the other screw? I assume I need to remove the blinker housings before I pull the bumper.
Thanks |

The lights I'm trying to remove are the ones in the bumper.
![]() The ones in the video are different. Thanks Todd |

You don't need to remove the lights to remove the bumper. Removing the lights won't help you. You do however need to unplug them. If you're feeling confident you can reach up from underneath and unplug them (you'll need to fish through the horn (left side), sidemarker, and foglight connections). Otherwise, put the car safely on ramps or jackstands and unplug them.
There are two bolts accessible underneath that hold the bumper to the shocks. I think they are 19mm? I don't remember. Look under the bumper, you'll see two holes - they're in there. They'll be tight, because, well, they hold the bumper on! One of these bolts may be inaccessible due to the bumper being pushed in, meaning you may need to remove the lower airdam. You'll have to look and see. Your first time removing it you may want another person to hold the other side when you slide it off the shocks. It's aluminum, but it is heavy. It's a bumper! Unless you have headlight washers (which you don't, if that is a pic of your car) the two bolts and unplugging the lights should leave the bumper ready to come off. But, to answer your first question, I think the other screw is concealed by the rubber pad. To remove the rubber pad, the bumper has to come off. I can see the back of the light housing but not sure if they just unplug or if there is something to unscrew to unplug them. I'll get it up on ramps so I have more room and look again.

They should just come off. The connections may be slightly corroded. And be careful with the rubber protective housings, they can be fragile.

Yeah, the rubber boots just disintegrated. Got the bumper off and the collapsed shock out. Anyone have a used shock?

I don't have a spare, maybe post a WTB request in the parts section.
Years ago I had the same problem but needed to drive the car to work the next day. I removed both shocks, I extended the collapsed shock to the same length as the good one. I drilled a hole thru the shock body, then put a sheet metal screw in the hole to prevent it from collapsing again. I drove it like that for awhile until I finally got the motivation to replace it with a good shock. It was a good temporary fix. Bruce

I have read about people drilling the good shock and collapsing it to get a sleeker look to the front bumper. If anyone is thinking of doing that I'll be happy to trade them a collapsed one for a good one. In the mean time I post a WTB or trade for a good shifter.
Thanks Again, Todd PS: Any ideas on what to do about and disintegrated blinker light boots? |
