Motor Mount died today... Easy job?
Ok..I already bought a set of Turbo solid mounts, they should be here in a few days. I either pay my mechanic $200 to do the job, or I set it up on jackstands in my cold garage during finals week. If it's not too bad and stressful, I'll do it. Otherwise..I do have the money...should I pay him to do it? Help me out here. If it was warm...I'd probably go for it. But something about 20 degree weather makes me a bit unmotivated

It isn't too difficult to do, yo do however need some way of supporting the engine from the top when you drop the crossmember.

The backyard way that I did mine did not involve dropping the crossmember.
I lifted the engine from the lift rings with my shop crane and roatated the mouns 180, then slipped them out.

It's not too bad. I lifted my engine by placing a 4x4 across the oil pan and jacking it up a little bit.
Then I loosend the crossmember enought to wiggle the old mounts out and the new mounts in. Bolt it back together... Done. Oh yeah, you'll need new bolts for the top of the mount. I got lucky and found some at Home Depot. |

I concure with Shepper. Block up the pan and drop the x-member down a bit. Don't need to unbolt the a-arms but possibly the hangers for the sway bar.

My motor mounts came with new bolts for the top. I didn't undo any hoses, as the haynes manual suggested. I jacked up the motor a hair and did one side at a time. Didn't undo the steering knuckle, I just took the bolt out of the A-arm, undid the crossmember (loosen the other side of the crossmember a bit) and swapped em.

Usually the car will vibrate at idle.

If you can't stick your fingers between the oil pan and the crossmember from the front of the car -- the engine mounts are mostly dead.

It was always pretty rough till after 2000. Now at 2000 it gets even worse. I shift at 3000 or under now just to keep it from vibrating. I had it checked out as well by my Porsche mechanic, and he got the same idea. My turbo mounts will be in on the 9th, and from what i seems, I can do it myself. By chance will I need to remove the front wheels? (long story behind this question).
