cooling fans running
My cooling fans have turning on in the garage in the middle of the night. Please let me know any tests for the sensors and relay.
Thanks, |

The most common source of this problem is the radiator temp switch. It bit me at Disneyworld when the battery went dead middle of the night. As soon as the aide jumped me, the fan came on. That's only supposed to happen as a backup for higher than normal coolant temps.

Before messing with the relay, check the temp sensor in the radiator just below the hose on the right side. That is the first thing on the trouble shooting list to check. Disconnect it and if the fans stop running, you've found the issue. They are about $30 and about an hour of work to change out. You have to drain the coolant. Also use a socket to remove the sensor. When installing the new one, be SURE to start it in by hand to make sure it's not cross threaded when you start to tighten it with the socket. Much cussing, wailing, and gnashing of teeth will ensue if you screw up the threads in the radiator reservoir.
Dropping the fans, removing the upper radiator hose, and removing the air box gives MUCH better access to allow you really SEE what you're doing. Last edited by dgcantrell; 07-20-2016 at 07:53 AM.. |
