Umm,... 928's are very heavy cars, not like the 944's. 944's have 50/50 weight distribution by placing the tranny in the rear of the car hence the transaxle. I dont know if the 928 has the same design. 928's are ridiculusly fast with there 5.7litre V8 engines. I think the 928 was the only porsche with a V8. Now, due to the fact the the car has a V8 in it,... it is ridiculously expensive when it come to repairs. If you break a timing belt on a 944 it's about 2 - 3000. On a 928, it's about $7000!!! I would just stick with the 944 series car. If you want power get a 951.

i was thinking the same thing about two years ago. so i found a 928s that was in nice condition, and took it for a test drive. it was okay, and felt like a porsche should, but to me the driving position & feedback was far better on my 951 than the 928. the only advantage i could think of was that it would be a better long-distance trip car.

The 928 has the transaxle design. I believe it does have 50/50 weight distribution or close to it, but as Overkill said, it's a very heavy car. My personal fantasy is to buy a 928 with a blown motor and drop a built LT1 in it - according to Renegade it's a very easy swap. You get to keep all the power accessories and the LT1 has about 100lbs more torque right out of the crate - with much more power available for cheap. Weighs about the same. Seems like a much more elegant swap than the 944.

944 vs 928

is very diferent
what 944 and what 928
Quote:
5.7litre
5.7 is a 350 chev engine, the 928 was 4.7, 5.0 and 5.5 the last gts. and exist 16 v and 32 v. continuos injection (k), L jetronic and motronic injection.
the first 928 are not quick but are fast like the europe cars.

928
If you really want a supercar and you have the money goes for a gts, this is the best 928, great brakes and the best engine 5.5 liter 32 v. with 345 hp. but is very expensive car and all the 928 are expensive to fix.
If I go for the a 928 will be a manual trans but if you want an auto stay away from the 3 speed. also the early manual trans have problems.
Prior to 82 stay away for usa car, because are uderpowered 220 to 250 hp but if you can find an euro version with 300 hp, for me this will be the best option because is a 16 v and mechanical injection, easy to fix in comparision with the others.
But 928 with 32 v, this cars are the same in all the world and with 316 hp are great gt cars with out problem in the manual (shifter) and without problem in the auro (4 speed).

944 will be the intelligent option, buy an s2
this is my personal opinion

There are advantages to each.

Right now, you can buy a very nice 944 for under $5000. You can also buy an ok early 928 or 928S for around that price as well. The difference lies in the repair costs... a radiator for a 944 can be bought for $20 off eBay, a radiator for a 928 can cost nearly $400. 928s are a mechanical nightmare. They are very complex cars, and it shows in the repair bill.

Now the performance aspect. The 944 is a pretty much straight sports car. It is light, handles like a dream, and has respectable accelleration. In the early cars, long distance trips can be a pain. A lot of noise on the highway, etc. The 928 is more of a Grand Tourer. It is big, heavy, fast. Chances are that most of the 928s you'll look at have leather everything and an automatic tranny. The 928 is VERY fast in a straight line, but I have a feeling that if you were to take a stock 944 onto a road track (LimeRock for example) and pit it against a same-vintage 928S, the 944 would mop the floor with it. Remember, to the casual driver (one that isn't an expert at driving 911s), the 944 gets better lap times than the 911SC.

So it all depends on what you're looking for: a well-handling sports car or a fast grand tourer.

In autocrossing, the 928 is in the same class as a 944NA- the 2.5 litre and under class. Turbos and S2s are in the over 2.5 class. Horsepower yes, but nimble they are not.

944 vs. 928: which is better? Depends on what you plan on doing with the car:

- Nothing beats a 928GTS when it comes to highway cruising: it is a Grand Tourer in the grandest form!

- Autocross: due to the heaviness of a 928, the 944 is a better cone gladiator than then 928.

- Track: tough comparison: you don't see too many 928's on the track, but given the right driver, a 928 can be a very formidable beat on the tracks, especially ones that favor high horsepower, like Watkins Glen. But you will go through brakes quite fast!

- In terms of maintenance, the 928 is a more expensive car to keep: more components, harder to get to.

Hope this helps,
-Z.

regarding 928's on track, there used to be (or still is) a speedvision gt racer that campaigned a white 928 and was pretty competitive. i know they required him to carry weight. when he raced in non-speedvision events, his race weight was 2650 lbs!
