Challenging Electrical Issue - windshield washer

This is bizarre.

My son's 1985.1 944.

New windshield washer pump does not work. I applied power directly to the pump and it works like a charm. I put my multi-meter on the pump wires in place of the pump and can see voltage when the wiper switch on the steering column is pulled. Yet when I attach those same wires to the pump and pull the lever, ... nothing.

Ideas?

The power required to work the pump is quite a bit more than what is needed to make the meter work. Look for a bad or corroded connection or a bad or corroded ground.

And that's what it was. Just needed to clean the contacts at the steering column switch.
