Power steering pump face seal problem

Alright first post! Yesterday I rebuilt the power steering pump on my 1985.5 944 using the Rennbay rebuild kit. It worked wonderfully for about a day, then all of the sudden, no power steering. I pulled the pump back apart and found the face seal had been sucked into the holes as shown in the image below. The photo isn't actually mine but from someone else who posted about the problem a while back. Mine was identical but I didn't think to take a picture before I removed the seal. How did this happen? Any help would be appreciated!

P.S These forums have been a huge help in maintaining my 944 over the past 2 years. Thanks!!
