FS: Running 60,000 mile 944S engine

Some of you may have seen that I was parting out a 1987 944S. I'm almost finished, but I still need to find a buyer for the engine. It has been sitting on a pallet for over a month (under a tarp). The trash bag is protecting the wiring harness- I can take more pictures of what is underneath, if desired.









This engine is the 2.5L, 16V, DOHC engine found in the 1987 and 1988 944S. It is rated at 188 hp and 170 ft-lb torque.

Info specific to this engine: This engine was pulled from my uncle's 944S, which was hit in the driver's door in a March snowstorm. After the accident, the car still started and moved under its own power. However, frame and rear suspension damage was so extensive that the car was totalled. Because I purchased the entire car from his insurance company, I have the DME, intake, airbox, and all other specific engine parts to this car. If you're planning an engine swap, I believe I removed everything important from the car (I have already junked the shell).

I have service records for this car, dating back to the early 1990s. Records indicate that the car accumulated 100 miles over a 2-year span in the late 1990s. While possible, I am assuming that the odometer gear was broken for this time. However, all other records point to a linear, honest mileage accumulation. The car had 53,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the wreck, and the odometer was working. I would say that 60,000 miles is a fair estimation of the total mileage.

Recent work done to the engine: a Sachs 951 spring clutch installed 5 years ago, for $2000 (records). This clutch has 10,000 miles on it, and is included with the engine. Also, my uncle replaced the bottom chain tensioner pad (the one that sees the most wear). He declared that the top pad was in good condition, so it was not replaced. He also replaced the valve cover gasket. He intended to keep this car before the accident, and never fails to properly service his cars. He is a mature adult- there was no beating on the car, smoky burnouts, etc. It was a daily/ beginner DE car for him- it probably never saw over 80 MPH at Lime Rock. The car passed track inspection by a tough Connecticut PCA-approved garage, so it should be free of oil leaks. It's a Porsche, though- I can't totally guarantee that it's leak free.

I autocrossed this car at a few PCA events last summer, and it always ran well. There was no overheating trouble, rough running, hesitation, or any other undesirable traits. In my opinion, this engine sounds nicer and higher-strung than the 8v engines.

The bad: While removing the engine, I dinged the reference sensor. It has a slight dent in the bottom of the sensor. The clearance between the sensor and flywheel will likely need to be regapped (not a big deal). For a good enough offer (in my judgment), I will include a NEW Bosch ref sensor that I was keeping for my own car.

Also, after sitting for an extended period, there is a bit of lifter noise on startup. It goes away after the engine has been given sufficient time to warm up.

I am asking $1200+cost of freight for this engine. I have a tow vehicle and trailer to bring this pallet to a local freight yard, and may be able to deliver locally (Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island). I have had much interest, but no firm commitments to purchasing this. I have seen the head go for $1000+ on eBay, so this is like throwing in a low-mileage block for $200. Don't forget that you're also getting a clutch in great shape. I'll even retension the belts with my genuine 9201 tool if it convinces someone to buy it.

As I've said, this engine has been under a tarp in my yard for over a month. I want it gone. If you want to make an offer, I'm open to it. However, please no real lowballing- this engine is more powerful, harder to find, and has lower mileage than many 8V engines for sale.

Note- I just found out that the 951 clutch is different from the 944 clutches. I figured that the spring clutch was a 951 thing, and retrofitted to the standard 944, like the motor mounts do.

I know for certain that the engine has a Sachs spring center clutch, the kind recommended for 944 clutch replacement.

I have the accompanying 944S non-LSD transaxle in my garage if anyone is interested. Shifts very well, but my uncle noted a little gear whine on deceleration- might be the Swepco 202 transmission oil that my uncle filled it with (never heard of anyone using it in a 44). I do not remember it being any worse than the whine in my 83- he is sometimes paranoid about noises. $500+shipping for that.
